Coimbatore, January 25

The release of telling video in which a mortuary staff demanding graft to hand over the body of the deceased to the next of kin has brought to light this evil practice being followed in the Government Medical College Hospital by some unscrupulous elements within the system.

It has become customary of some staff to demand Rs.500 to hand over the bodies of the deceased after the post-mortem to the next of kin before handing over the corpse.

The Government medical college caters to the over 8000 patients from the western Tamilnadu daily and many of them get admitted as in-patients in the many wards of the hospital.

Whenever some patient dies, the body is sent for postmortem after which it was sent to the mortuary or handed over to the relatives of the deceased. Relatives of the deceased are taken for a ride by the hospital staff, who demand graft to hand over the bodies.

The Medical college authorities should check this menace which is going on for years. There have been cases in which subordinate staff has refused to hand over the body if and when a relative was not ready to part with the graft.

The members of public have demanded that the medical authorities should take stern action against errant staff, who take the patients and their relatives for a ride and fleece them in a hard-hearted way.
